The striking blue hue of this cocktail is achieved with blue curaçao, an orange liqueur originating from the Caribbean island of Curaçao. The liqueur is distilled from the sun-dried peel of a Valencia orange, which turned bitter in the Caribbean climate. Interestingly, blue curaçao wasn’t always blue. In the early 1900s, the Bols distilling company added blue food coloring to create an element of alchemical mystery, resulting in the vibrant blue ingredient we use today.
